Community Conversation 2013
A town meeting was held on May 6. Town Council reported on activities during the past year and collected input from residents for 2013-2014. Fifty-five people attended. After the discussion, voting machines were used to determine support for a variety of initiatives.
Council Report (in a nutshell)
-
The Town water system is completed & approved - but the presence of THMs has caused concern. Council is looking for a solution.
-
Sewage - Town is looking into a small footprint sewage system to serve areas not currently on the system. These areas have a rocky terrain and sparse population.
-
Debt completely paid off in 2012.
-
Land sales and housing starts are up.
-
Changes are coming to our Waste Management Site. As of July 1, Sunnyside Waste Management Site will no longer be permitted to accept industrial / commercial waste. This is in accordance with Eastern Waste Management policy. We have been advised that this type of waste will be going to Robin Hood Bay after that date. The Sunnyside site will still be permitted to accept special organic waste.
-
Efforts in regional collaboration are continuing. We meet regularly with the other isthmus towns and have developed a regional emergency plan. We have not been successful in obtaining funds for a regional business centre.
-
Last year was a big year for culture in our community - we held a successful six-day Festival and added four history boards to Truce Sound Lookout. We also built a coastal trail, a peace garden and a new war memorial.
-
Developed a sustainable action strategy for the community.
Feedback from Residents for 2013-2014
-
Three initiatives that residents would like Town Council to pursue are: a new community building, a marina feasibility study and better recreational opportunities.
-
The town newsletter should be continued.
-
They support the Targa Rally.
-
They would like to participate in Tidy Towns again this year.
-
They want to see more story boards at the Lookout.
-
They would like to see more regional collaboration, especially in three areas: water quality, emergency services and recreation.
-
The Lions Club is currently used for almost every activity that takes place in town. It is old and needs repair. Residents feel a new community centre is badly needed and should be used for youth activities, seniors, recreation and community events.
-
Residents would like to see $$$ invested in the Town's sustainability and wellbeing.
We are now debt-free and we’ve made progress in many other areas, as well. It’s time to report back to you and find out if your community priorities have changed.
Join the conversation and help shape our community.

Targa Motorsport Competition in Sunnyside on September 14
Volunteer Road Marshals Needed
Targa is an international motorsport that competes annually in Newfoundland. It is a test of both skill and speed. . Sunnyside is one of this year's "stages." That means our roads will be closed off on on September 14th for the competition. Drivers will be clocked from one end of town to the other and there will be road marshalls along the route to make sure the road is clear all the way.
TThe 2012 competition starts in St. John’s on September 8 and concludes back in the capital on September 15. This is the 11th annual rally in Newfoundland. This year's route will cover more than 2,000 kilometres of challenging, twisty roads in central and eastern Newfoundland, including up to 450 kilometres of closed-road, flat-out Targa stages like the one in Sunnyside.
Anyone interested in becoming a road marshal for this competition should contact Boyd Snook at 693-2036.

Paying Down the Debt
In November, you told us your highest priority was a financially stable, wellmanaged community. You also said it was important to pay down the debt. During the past four months the Town has paid down $146,760 on its debt, resulting in total principal payments (not including interest) of $754,814 since 2002. Our remaining debt is now $186,755; this will be addressed again in July.
